Our county’s elementary schools are blossoming with a new initiative: a farm-to-school garden project, made possible by a $15,000 grant through the Oregon Department of Education Farm to Child Nutrition Programs. This exciting project will bring the joy of gardening and healthy eating to 150 students across four schools. Tabletop greenhouses and hydroponic systems will transform classrooms into vibrant learning environments, introducing students to the wonders of growing their own food. The project will be integrated with the Growing Healthy Kids Nutrition curriculum, providing a holistic approach to healthy eating and sustainable practices. The initiative aims to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among students while fostering a deeper appreciation for where their food comes from.
